In 2009, County Carlow local authority had a carpark to illuminate which was used by tourists and locals for walking and general sight seeing. When these walkers returned to their car park after dark, it was both a discomfort and a safety concern in finding their car. It was was not practical to connect to the electricity grid as the nearest connection point was several kilometers away.

Instead a stand alone solar lighing LED system was installed, with automatic occupancy sensor control and a time delay mechanism to allow users to vacate the car park slowly. The system was augmented with a wind turbine on this Project. With anticipated 2 hours of use per night and a 2 week backup, the system us designed for year round usage. Today, all aspects of this technology have improved considerably, including cost, maintenance, appearance, operating hours, reserve battery hours, are illumination, etc.
