Prevention of Light Spill

Prevention of Light Spill

The Lighting Design process can usually restrict or prevent Light Spill.     By carefully selecting the Luminaire, Optics, height, wattage/light output and location, the cut-off required can usually be achieved, without resorting to extra measures such as Shields.   VeeLite often provides lighting designs (calculations) to LEED certification standard, which has strict requirements on light spill.

Various Types of Shielding to prevent back spill are shown:

Local Prevention of Light Spill

JULY 2021: VeeLite supplied c. 300 x SupraLED Area Lights to Irish Rail for an external lighting upgrade at Stations across Ireland.  Being Dark Skies compliant, these luminaires emit no light above horizontal.  Furthermore, these Luminaires are of flat glass construction, allowing only downlight, and are significantly more discreet and less obvious than any Lights they would have replaced.

At 1 Station (Dalkey, Co Dublin), there was 1 nearby House (see photo) where the Resident requested that the spill to his Property be eliminated.  For this Station, we supplied an Adjustable Shield to eliminate Light Spill on to this neighbouring Property.  This shield can be adjusted up or down on site to control the upper Beam angle and prevent light spill.  By adjustment on site, the light can be be cut off at a boundary, window, etc.  The Shield can also be rotated as necessary.

VeeLite designed this Shield as an accessory which might be required in built-up and sensitive areas, but to date (2026),  only 1 Shield has ever been requested and supplied, which was for this Project.  It remains an ordering option should it ever be required.
