BREEAM & LEED
We have also been involved with many Projects built to LEED standards and we have designed the lighting to meet specific LEED lighting Design requirements. LEED and BREEAM are similar, but different.
LEED is a US non-profit organisation which sets standards to be implemented by a building design team and is generally seen as a simpler approach.
BREEAM is more quantitative and complex and requires a licenced Assessor who will charge a fee. Whether LEED or BREEAM are used will depend on a variety of factors including type of Project, location, budget, etc. Both has a strong emphasis on Energy Saving Lighting and general good environmental standards such as avoiding glare, light spill, etc.
One of the largest Retail Centres in Ireland, Mahon Point Shopping Centre has also achieved Energy Awards. It was the first building in Ireland to gain and retain BREEAM in use certification, which is a certification of the sustainability of a building. VeeLite supplied the external lighting – Area Car park Lights, Streetlights and Floodlights – which provided a 76% reduction in External lighting Energy usage. VeeLite have recently completed a similar Car Park Lighting retrofit at Liffey Valley Shopping Centre in Dublin.
Energy Saving Lighting
Issue no. 29 of Passive House + Sustainable Building Magazine features a housing scheme at Georges Place, Dun Laoghaire on the Front cover. Inside, there is a 5 Page Article on these A1 rated houses being built by the Local Authority. See Issue 29 – Pages 26 to 31 which covers the Energy efficiency and passive house features of this Project. The VeeLite Streetlighting provided with this Project is shown on several Photos.
