SPORTS PITCH LIGHTING

STEP 1: HOW MUCH LIGHT DO I NEED ?

If unsure, please ask us (Use Form below or telephone, email, etc)

Planning the Pitch Lighting

1. Advise VeeLite of the exact size of the Pitch (Length x Width) and what light level you require (or describe activity).

2. VeeLite will advise and cost for Equipment needed (Poles, Floodlights and cost of this equipment).

Using the Lighting Scheme, ask a Local Contractor (maybe someone in the Club) to price for installation (Poles, electric cables, Floodlights, etc).

Having received costs for the Lighting and the Installation and if the Project is likely to proceed, visit your Local Council – Planning Dept.   Ring in advance and make an Appointment.   At this meeting, they will give you feedback, tell you how to proceed and how long the formal Planning process will take.

The main problems that may prevent planning permission relate to nearby Roads or Buildings that the Floodlights may impact.

The cost of the Lighting Equipment and Installation, together with any other costs that may have arisen (eg. From feedback with the Planning Office). Possibly a Planning Consultant or Architect may have been recommended.

Use all the costs or estimates above as a Budget for Fund raising, Grant applications, etc.  Allow 10% extra for Contingencies etc.

When you formally apply in writing, the Council may ask for a specific Lighting layout superimposed on a Map of your local neighbourhood, so they can see light spill, glare, etc.  We can do this but will most likely charge a fee.  Each Council can ask for different information so its hard to be precise.

Maps of your Pitch and/or Local Area may be needed.

When planning permission has been received, the Project can commence.

HOW MUCH LIGHT IS NEEDED ?

CIBSE are the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers who are an Authority in recommending Light Levels and General Lighting standards for Public areas, workplaces, Sports, etc.

Typical Recommendations:

  • 75 Lux for Training and Local Competition in Football and Rugby.  Note Training Level would usually include Recreation and low level competition.
  • 200 Lux for Mid Level Competition (Soccer / Gaelic Football) and Low Level Competition or Training (Tennis / Hurling).

SPECIFIC SPORTS ORGANISATIONS:

RUGBY

RFU (England) recommends 100 Lux for Training and between 100 Lux and 200 Lux for Competition.

PLANNING PERMISSION NEEDED ?

Planning Permission will be required for New Projects.  We can produce any Lighting Calculation (Lighting Design) in the Format required by Local Authorities.

The difference is mainly a Format issue, but specific issues, example – showing Lighting Spill outside the Pitch or onto nearby Properties etc may be required.

INSTALLATION  ?

VeeLite is a Lighting Design and Manufacturing Company.   We do not install Lighting. Instead we work closely with Electrical Contractors and can provide Recommendations if required.
